Coleman was born in the Lancashire town of Blackpool. She was a student at the Arnold School in Blackpool where she was head girl and received straight As on her A-levels. In 2009, the British Soap Awards 2009 nominated her in both categories: Best Actress - Sexiest Feminine and Best Dramatic Performance category. Coleman was awarded an award at the TV Choice Awards nomination for Best Actress. Steven Moffat revealed at a Doctor Who Press Conference on the 21st of March that Coleman was going to play Matt Smith as the Doctor's Companion following the departure of Karen Gillan, Arthur Darvill and others have left the show. Moffat chose to choose her for the role because she has the best chemistry with Smith. She also spoke more quickly than he does.
